Course A. Getting started

Course A is for those who want to get started with fly casting and fly fishing. No prior knowledge is required.

The course runs over 3 evenings, lasting approximately 3 hours each evening.

We’ll take a leisurely look at the essentials you need to get started with single-handed fly fishing. You’ll learn how the equipment is put together, what the different parts do, and how the rod, reel, line, leader and fly work together.

Among other things, we’ll cover:

• One-handed fly casting

• Fly selection

• Leaders

• Fly line

• The function and uses of the fly rod

• Practical details that are useful to know when you go out fly fishing

The aim is that, by the end of the course, you’ll be well-equipped to fly-fish on your own – and eventually catch fish using a fly.

Loan of single-handed equipment is included in the course. This includes the rod, reel, line, leader and fly/tuft. If you have your own equipment, you are of course welcome to use it. If you’re unsure what you have or what’s suitable, we’ll sort it out together.
